The Beginning Thanalidam is an exciting community initiative from Union Christian College Aluva, designed to strengthen our connection with society! This fantastic idea sprang to life during inspiring conversations among a dedicated group of five during the Centenary celebrations. The team, which includes esteemed former Manager Rev. Thomas John, former Principal Prof. (Dr.) M I Punnoose, Coordinator Dr. Anumol Jose, alumni Shri Adv. Ayub Khan, and All Students Association President Ajith Kumar C., are eager to make a positive impact!

The name "Thanalidam" was proposed by Adv. Ayub Khan, and it effectively reflects the goals and vision of the initiative. The primary aim of Thanalidam is to connect society with both the community and the environment. The guiding principles of Thanalidam are based on the three R's: Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle.

In May 2023, the Free Mid Day Meal programme was launched, followed by the commencement of the Eco Shop and Thrift Shop in November. This initiative received strong support from the alumni of UCC, as well as from current and retired teaching and non-teaching staff, and students.

Thanalidam faced two significant challenges. The first was the need for a building, which was resolved when the college provided 6 lakhs in funding. The second challenge involved the collection of products, which was successfully addressed thanks to the efforts of alumni and college staff who stepped forward to help.

The administration of Thanalidam includes Coordinator Dr. Anumol Jose, Shri Ajilesh, the Principal), a non-teaching staff representative, two student coordinators, a college union representative, and one alumni representative.

Why Thrifting?

Thrifting is an exciting way to find gently used treasures! Not only is it an eco-friendly choice, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. At Thanalidam, you’ll discover a fantastic selection of thrifted items that are perfect for your everyday needs!

●     Economically Fashionable: Thrifting at Thanalidam is a fantastic way to save money and discover an amazing selection of stylish, elegant clothes that won’t break the bank!

●     Conservating Resources: Creating a new product is a big endeavour that involves lots of energy, raw materials, water, and dedicated people. Did you know that making just one cotton shirt can use over 700 gallons of water? That’s more than the average person consumes in three years! This highlights the vital role of Thanalidam, which helps lessen the demand for new products and plays a crucial part in conserving our precious resources. Together, we can make a positive impact!

●     Least waste: Production creates a huge amount of waste, which can really harm our environment. Thrifting is an amazing solution, breathing new life into products! Thanalidam offers incredible benefits, supporting both our planet and the most vulnerable in our communities. Together, we can make a positive impact and embrace sustainability!

Milestones

Thanalidam has achieved significant success through various socially and morally impactful initiatives. It acts as a shelter for those enduring the harsh conditions of hardship. In just one year, nearly 5,000 items have been sold through Thanalidam.

●     First Sale: Thanalidam Eco Shop made its first sale on June 16, 2023, executed by Principal Dr. M.I. Punnosse. The products created by the students and staff of UC College were exhibited and sold in the college's common staff room.

●     Workshop: Thanalidam organized a workshop on making paper bags in collaboration with the Department of Botany. The workshop offered students a chance to learn how to make paper bags.

●     MOU with Amar Sath Foundation: Thanalidam has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Amar Saath Foundation, an NGO dedicated to supporting marginalized sections of society. This partnership aims to collect and distribute items from the Thanalidam thrift shop to those in need residing in villages and slum areas across India. Additionally, items contributed by the Amar Sath Foundation will also be distributed through Thanalidam.

●     Special Sale: As part of Onam, the NSS unit of UC College, in association with Thanalidam, conducted a special sale in front of Kacheri Malika, offering a 50% discount on selected items.

Well begun is half done! At Union Christian College, our Thanalidam initiative highlights our dedication to social responsibility and environmental sustainability, creating a brighter future for all. Join us in this journey and discover how together, we can achieve great things!
